Reflect to Connect: How Much Does Online Therapy Cost In NYC?
Short answer: It depends.
Starting therapy is an important step toward taking care of your mental health, but figuring out the cost can feel overwhelming. If you're considering online therapy in New York City, you may be wondering how much sessions cost, whether insurance covers virtual appointments, and how to find a therapist who fits your budget.
Online therapy is typically available within a range of price points. Your actual cost depends on factors such as the therapist's credentials, session length, insurance coverage, and whether reduced-fee appointments are available.
What Factors Affect the Cost of Online Therapy?
Not every therapist charges the same amount. Understanding what influences pricing can help you compare your options.
1. The therapist's qualifications and experience
Therapists have different educational backgrounds, licenses, training, and areas of specialization. Providers with extensive experience or specialized training may charge higher fees. For example, an individual could specialize in perinatal mental health, meaning that they should have specialized training and credentialing to validate this.
When comparing therapists, consider their qualifications and experience alongside their rates. The lowest price is not necessarily the best fit, and a higher fee does not automatically guarantee better care.
2. The length of each session
Many individual therapy appointments last approximately 45–60 minutes, although session lengths vary. Shorter appointments may cost less, while longer sessions or specialized services may have different fees.
Ask whether the quoted price includes the full appointment and whether an initial consultation or intake session has a separate fee.
3. The type of therapy you are looking for
Individual therapy, couples therapy, and family therapy may have different prices. Couples or family sessions may require additional time or involve different treatment considerations.
If you're looking for help with a specific diagnosis or concern such as anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship concerns, or stress, ask about the provider's experience and training around your specific needs.
4. Online versus in-person appointments
Online therapy can make it easier to attend sessions without commuting across the city, paying for transportation, or traveling between work and appointments.
However, virtual therapy is not always less expensive than in-person therapy because a provider’s credentials and time dedicated for your sessions are still the same as an in-person session would be. Many practices charge the same rate for both formats because of these considerations.
5. In-Network, Out-of-Network, Private Pay
Providers are typically either in-network with insurance companies, out-of-network with insurance companies or private pay.
For example: Reflect to Connect Mental Health Counseling, PLLC is an out-of-network provider, so we do not contract with insurance directly, but we do offer courtesy billing on your behalf and will submit claims directly to your insurance company for reimbursement. We are also able to verify out-of-network benefits to see what your insurance plan entails and if you are able to see us out-of-network and still use your insurance benefits even though we are not contracted with them.
